Where should we start with family time, money and leave?

The yearly habits that save families the most money and stress at every stage: leave around school holidays, child tax reliefs, credits and payouts, and protection.

Quick answer

A few yearly habits pay off at every stage. Plan leave around school and public holidays, claim the child tax reliefs, track the credits and payouts your children get, and check that your family’s protection still fits. From April 2027, Child Credits of S$2,000 a year start paying out for children turning 1 to 16 from 2026.

The useful number: Child Credits of S$2,000 a year, then a S$10,000 PSEA top-up in the year a child turns 17.

What matters most for the whole family?

Time together, money that arrives when it is needed, and a plan for the weeks when care falls through. These do not belong to one stage: they come round every year, so a little planning each January or after each Budget goes a long way.

Which decisions and deadlines are ahead?

  1. Each year: plan leave around public holidays and MOE school holidays. Calendars for 2026 and 2027 are in the leave optimiser.
  2. Tax season: check the child reliefs. Qualifying Child Relief is S$4,000 per child and Grandparent Caregiver Relief is S$3,000, under IRAS conditions.
  3. Credits: Budget 2026 gives a one-off S$500 Child LifeSG Credit to every Singapore citizen child aged 0 to 12 in 2026: born 2014 to 2025 paid in July 2026, born 2026 paid in April 2027.
  4. Payouts: Child Credits of S$2,000 a year from April 2027, then a S$10,000 PSEA top-up in the year a child turns 17.
  5. Protection: compare each working parent’s cover with the LIA rule of thumb of 9 times annual income for death and 4 times for critical illness. It is an industry benchmark.
  6. Celebrations and weekends: budget birthdays from editable estimates and pick outings that fit the day.

Which tools and downloads help?

Print the Birthday party checklist and budget sheet, the Outing packing list, the Family screen-use agreement and the Backup-care contact sheet. Members also get the School holiday leave-days planner 2027.

What should you check elsewhere?

IRAS decides your tax, LifeSG and MOE decide credits and payouts, and the LIA benchmark is a population average, not a recommendation. We never name, rank or recommend an insurer or a product. Your LifeSG app holds the authoritative record of what your family has received.
