Quick answer

Primary 1 starts on Monday 4 January 2027. Our plan has 18 practice tasks in 7 areas, such as paying with coins at recess, packing the bag and asking a teacher for help. At 3 tasks a week, the earliest suit about 8 weeks before school starts, from 9 November 2026. Progress means practised, never ready or not ready.

Work out yours →

The useful number: 18 practice tasks in 7 areas. At 3 a week, start about 8 weeks before P1 begins on 4 January 2027.

Who is this for?

Parents of K2 children starting Primary 1 in January, and parents in the first fortnight of P1. In 2027, Primary 1 and Kindergarten 1 start on Monday 4 January 2027. Primary 2 to 6 start on Tuesday 5 January 2027.

How do you use the weeks before P1?

  1. Pick up to 3 priority areas: morning routine, belongings, buying food at recess, asking for help, getting to and from school, after-school arrangements, or feelings and friends.
  2. Choose how many tasks a week, from 1 to 5. The default is 3.
  3. Start with tasks that suit the most time, such as paying with coins and using a public toilet alone, about 8 weeks before.
  4. Move to the school morning, the school trip and introducing themselves about 4 weeks before.
  5. Finish with labelled belongings, the pick-up point and the after-school plan about 2 weeks before.
  6. Tick each practice go. A task shows “Practised” with the number of goes.
  7. Started late? The plan keeps the most useful tasks first instead of cramming. Once school starts it switches to first-fortnight mode.

Term 1 runs from 4 January to 12 March 2027. Recess tasks come early because paying, queuing and finishing a snack in a short break take the most goes.

Practise, tick and print

My P1 transition plan spreads the tasks over the weeks you have. Print the P1 transition plan checklist, put the Bag-packing chart by the door, and role-play recess with the Canteen role-play cards (members only, free to join).

Next, make the school morning chart with the Visual routine builder.

What this plan is not

It is not a readiness test. There is no score, percentage or pass mark, and no comparison with other children. Every child settles at their own pace. The tasks are our own wording. MOE’s Parent Kit has more ideas.

The plan switches to first-fortnight mode with the same tasks, so you can keep practising during the first 14 days.
