Work back from your first day at work to know when to shortlist centres, join waitlists and confirm a place. Typical lead times are kept apart from official ECDA and MOE dates.

Quick answer

Start shortlisting about 12 months before your first day back. Join waitlists about 10 months before. Popular centres often have 8 to 12 month queues. These lead times come from parent experience, not official rules. The official dates are ECDA’s age bands (infant care from 2 to 18 months, childcare from 18 months) and MOE Kindergarten registration each March.

Who needs this timeline, and when?

It is for expecting parents and parents of babies who need full-day infant care or childcare when they go back to work. Start as soon as you know your return date. Missed the ideal window? The last step below is for you.

Your child’s age on day one decides the programme. Infant care is for children aged 2 to 18 months. Childcare runs from 18 months. ECDA sets these bands.

How do you secure a place, step by step?

  1. Fix your return-to-work date. The Parental leave planner helps you count your leave.
  2. Work out the programme from your child’s age on day one: infant care below 18 months, childcare from 18 months.
  3. About 12 months before (an estimate), shortlist on LifeSG preschool search. You can bookmark up to 10 centres. Weigh home against office, opening hours and fees.
  4. About 10 months before (an estimate), contact 3 to 5 centres directly to register interest. Enrolment is with each centre, not through LifeSG. Many charge a small registration fee.
  5. About 4 months before (an estimate), call for your queue position. Accept an offer and apply for the subsidy through the centre.
  6. About 1 month before (an estimate), plan settling-in. Most centres phase children in over 2 to 4 weeks of short days.
  7. Official: your child moves from infant care to childcare at 18 months. If your centre offers only infant care, line up the childcare place too.
  8. Official: MOE Kindergarten K1 registration runs in March of the year before intake. In 2026 it ran from 23 to 31 March 2026 for K1 in 2027, for children born 2 January 2022 to 1 January 2023.

What does an October 2027 return look like?

Say you go back to work on 1 October 2027 and your baby will be about 7 months old. That is infant care. The planner gives:

Shortlist centres (estimate)
1 October 2026
Join the waitlists (estimate)
1 December 2026
Chase and confirm (estimate)
1 June 2027
Settling-in month (estimate)
1 September 2027
Back to work
1 October 2027

The shortlist date has just passed, so shortlist this week. You still have time to join waitlists.

Plan your dates and track every centre

The Preschool waitlist timeline planner works out each date from your return day. Keep each call and reply on the Waitlist follow-up tracker (members only, free to join), and take the Preschool tour checklist on visits.

Next, see what you will pay with the Childcare subsidy calculator.

What this timeline cannot promise

Every centre runs its own waitlist, so we never predict a place. Anchor operators in new estates can take longer than 12 months. Quieter centres may have places now. Later MOE Kindergarten dates are projected from the latest exercise and marked “expected”.

If your child has additional support needs, ask each centre about inclusion support early.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I join a preschool waitlist in Singapore?

About 10 months before your child’s first day. Popular centres often have 8 to 12 month queues. This is typical parent experience, not an official deadline. Try the preschool waitlist timeline planner for your own date.

Can I apply for a preschool place on LifeSG?

You search on LifeSG, but you enrol with each centre. LifeSG preschool search lets you bookmark up to 10 centres. Then contact your top 3 to 5 centres directly.

Is there an official deadline to join an infant care waitlist?

No. Each centre runs its own list. The official dates are ECDA’s age bands and MOE Kindergarten registration, which ran from 23 to 31 March 2026 for K1 in 2027.

When does infant care become childcare?

At 18 months. ECDA’s infant care band runs from 2 to 18 months, and childcare starts at 18 months. If your centre offers only infant care, plan the childcare place early.

What if every centre near me is full?

Call quieter centres this week and keep a backup. Widen your search to centres near work. Stay on your first-choice lists and chase your queue position about 4 months before.

How long is settling-in at a childcare centre?

Usually 2 to 4 weeks of short days. Plan for a parent or helper on standby that month.
