Quick answer

P1 brings a new rhythm. School can end long before work does, and your child needs practical skills such as packing a bag and buying food at recess. Practise them in the weeks before school starts and plan who covers every after-school hour. Later come the Tdap-IPV booster in Primary 5 and the PSLE Score from 4 to 32.

The useful number: Childcare leave drops from 6 days to 2 days a year per parent when your youngest Singapore citizen child is aged 7 to 12.

What matters most in primary school?

Independence, after-school care and a sustainable approach to learning. The first fortnight is about routines and confidence, not marks. Later, parents weigh student care, help at home and tuition together, so it helps to see the whole week before adding anything.

Which decisions and deadlines are ahead?

  1. Before P1 starts: practise the everyday skills a few times each week: the bag, the water bottle, buying food, asking a teacher for help.
  2. The first 14 days: plan drop-offs, pick-ups and who is on call for the first fortnight.
  3. After school: map every hour between dismissal and the end of the working day, and who covers it.
  4. Leave: when your youngest Singapore citizen child is aged 7 to 12, each parent gets 2 days of extended childcare leave a year, down from 6 days.
  5. Primary 5: the Tdap-IPV booster, one jab given through the school health programme.
  6. PSLE: each subject gets an Achievement Level, and the PSLE Score runs from 4 to 32.

Which tools and downloads help?

Print the P1 transition plan checklist, the Bag-packing chart, the P1 orientation question sheet and the After-school routine chart. Before adding a class, read Questions before adding a tuition class. Members also get the First-fortnight caregiver plan.

What should you check elsewhere?

Your school sets its own timings, orientation and communication. MOE and SEAB decide PSLE grading; our calculator estimates from marks. No tool here judges whether a child is ready for school. At the National Day Rally 2026 the Government announced more childcare leave for parents of Singapore citizen children aged 12 and below. It is 8 days a year with one child, 10 with two and 12 with three or more. The start date is not yet set, so check MOM before you plan leave.
